THE WAIT IS NEARLY OVER FOR THE HUSKIES OONINCX
If you are truly a hockey fan, be sure to mark your calendar with the following date - October 8, 2004. Yes, that's the 2004 season opening game for the SCSU womens hockey team vs the Ohio State University Buckeyes. But, it's also a very important date for SCSU Junior-to -be hockey player, Kristy Oonincx. And, for the hockey fan, the first game you'll get to see one of college hockey's premier fowards in the cardinal and black. SCSU womens hockey coach, Jason Lesteberg has to be pleased as well- that's she's skating for the Huskies. You see, she absolutley shredded the Huskies during her two years with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. In eight games vs the Huskies, she produced 19 points that included 9 goals and 10 assists. She had a seven-point weekend vs the Huskies in March of 2001 as a freshman and a six-point weekend in October of 2002 as a sophomore. The 5'7" forward was third in WCHA rookie scoring in 2001-02 with 38 points (17G, 21 A), led the team in plus / minus with an astounding +41 and had 10 multiple point games. And although she missed several games to start her sophomore season, she still put up 25 points in 24 games with 3 PPG's and 2 shorthanded goals. She hails from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and prepped at the well known Notre Dame College in Wilcox that has produced loads of NCAA hockey talent including incoming SCSU men's team first-year player, Andrew Gordon. While there, she piled up 498 points and was a Western Shield All-Star selection. Her decision to leave the Golden Gophers brought with it the requirement to sit out the 2003-04 season - no easy thing for this motivated blue-chipper. But, as she indicated to the SCSU University Chronical after transferring, "I'm just going to try and be a leader, work hard like the other girls, and try to score some goals. If I can help turn the SCSU program into a winner, it would mean more to me to leave my name on something like that than to win a championship." You can be sure Kristy Oonincx has October 8 marked on her calendar. If you are a hockey fan, you should too. You just may witness something special for the SCSU women's hockey program.
Note: Kristy's first home game will be versus the University of North Dakota on October 22, 2004.
