SCOTT MEYER RETURNS TO STAY CLOSE TO THE GAME
After 23 years of hockey it may have been one of the toughest decisions of his life.  But, in early March, former SCSU All-American goaltender, Scott Meyer said goodbye to the game he to begin the next phase of his life. And, he thinks "in the long run it's a smart decision".  The grind of splitting time between the AHL's Hartford Wolfpack and the ECHL's Charlotte Checkers might get the best of ant pro athlete.  But, the most difficult thing to deal with was being 1500 miles away from his wife and four year old son Caydon ( still living in Minnesota ) and only being able to see them three times during  the season.  And although his confidence in his ability to compete at a high level has not wavered he admits "it's all about opportunity and timing" to stick in the AHL as a starting goalie or to reach the NHL.  Certainly his numbers at Charlotte prove his point.  He left with the all-time best save percentage and shutouts (6) among Charlotte goaltnders, had a .923 save percentage including three shutouts and was named "Goalie of the Week"  twice this season and goalie of the month once last season.  Nevertheless, he has no regrets about leaving the game as he commented "my goal was always to play college hockey - a pro career was a bonus".  And althugh his playing days are ended, he is now focusing on his family, career as a mortgage broker, working several goalie camps and helping to give back to the "game and position (goaltending) that he loves".  After several conversations with Coach Dahl, he agreed to take on the responsibily of SCSU goaltender coach for the 2004-05 season.  On Thursday, Meyer had his first meeting with the goaltenders and he has a collection of game tapes to review as he starts his evaluation of the goaltenders and begins working with them on an off-season training regiment.  And, even though he has only seen a few games, he feels "they have a lot of potential, have shown they can play, and I'll work with them to help make them top goaltenders".  Meyer places great emphasis on hard work ad goal setting and sees a different practice routine in the fall.  His plans are to be at the NHC two times a week plus on game day.  This summer he'll also keep busy with several goalie camps and is considering soe options for St. Cloud.
