Former SCSU Husky Brett Lievers has never been one to take the easy way out. "Golden Brett" as he is referred to in Finland plays for the Karpat Oulu hockey club of the Finnish Elite League and is the only American on his squad. This NHL caliber team has been described by Lievers as "the most skilled hockey he has ever seen" - and he has seen some hockey since joining the Huskies as a "true" freshman out of Wayzata High School in 1990.
This four- year regular for the then fledgling Huskies, Lievers piled up 124 points in a career shortened by playing in only 16 games in 1991-92 due to injury. His statistics include 53 goals (8th all-time), 71 assists (9th all-time) and 5 shorthanded goals. A pure goal scorer, he was always a threat to score and to this day, one of he most skilled and dangerous offensive players in Husky Hockey history.
Brett was the 223rd pick in the fifth round of the 1990 NHL entry draft by the New York Rangers. He signed on with the Utah Grizzlies of the International Hockey League after his senior season at SCSU and won the Ken McKenzie Trophy as the American player judged to be most outstanding in his first season in the IHL. Two years in the IHL netted him 111 points in 153 games and a trip to the IHL championship game. From there, he spent time with the Ottawa Senators organization where he suited up for several pre-season games, the Fribourg-Gotteron and ECR Revier Lowen Club of the Swiss League ( 1997-98 ) and the Kassel Huskies of the German League ( 1998-99 ). In 1999-00 he split time with the Chicago Wolves of the IHL and the Pelican Lahti team of the Finnish Elite League. For the past three seasons he's competed for Karpat Oulu ( Oulu, Finland ) scoring 120 points in 154 games. He finished the season as the leading scorer for Karpat with 43 points in 56 games. At age 32, he doesn't appear to be slowing down in this league which emphasizes skill, speed and wide open play.
Although not in the limelight of the NHL, this soft spoken former Husky continues to perform in one of the premier hockey leagues in the world and certainly should be considered as having one of the more successful professional hockey careers of all former Huskies.
