NEWELL, NIXON WIN AWARDS AT 2008 WOMEN'S BANQUET
Senior Kendall Newell was voted the team's MVP and Ashley Nixon was awarded the team's top first-year player at the SCSU Women's hockey banquet held at Atwood Center on the SCSU campus on Sunday, April 6, 2008. A crowd of close to 100 were on hand to honor the 2007-08 seniors and those earning team awards at the annual banquet sponsored by the Center Ice Club. SCSU President Earl Potter and Associate Athletic Director Sue Becker were also on hand and addressed the crowd. CIC President Bill Prout welcomed the audience along with the SCSU coaches Jeff Giesen, Jennifer Kranz, and Jason Johnson who were on hand to present the awards.
Other award winners at the banquet included senior Brittni Kuyper, "Most Dedicated Hockey Player", Maggie Mickelson, "Most Improved Hockey Player", Laura Fast - "Outstanding Student Athlete" and Meaghan Pezon, who was presented the St. Cloud Times "Star of the Season" by St. Cloud Times Hockey writer, Kevin Allenspach.
Highlights also included recognition of the 13 student athletes who were named WCHA All Academic and the four players chosen as WCHA Scholar Athletes. Senior captain Laura Fast (Calgary, Alberta), Abby Krause (Moorhead), Marie-Michel Lemieux (Boisbriand, Quebec), Rogers native Michelle Moen, Blaine native Sammy Nixon, Monticello native Brita Schroeder, Jenaca Fredheim (Campbell River, B.C.) Danielle Hirsch (Bloomington), Caitlin Hogan (Oakdale), Kelly Meierhofer (Sauk Rapids), Meaghan Pezon (Eden Prairie), Holly Roberts (St. Cloud) and Kendall Newell (Phoenix, Ariz.) were named.
2008-09 team captains were announced by Coach Geisen to include Brita Schroeder, Captain and Felecia Nelson and Amy Currier, Assistant Captains.
SCSU senior player Laura Fast will lace up the skates one last time as a collegiate seniors as she will participate in the NCAA Frozen Four skills Challenge, to take place Friday, April 11, at the Pepsi Center in Denver. The Skills Challenge will consist of six events, including puck control relay, fastest skater, hardest shot, rapid fire shooting, accuracy shooting and penalty shots. The event will be televised live, beginning at 7 p.m. mountain time and will be preceded by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award at 5:30 p.m., and the Hockey Humanitarian Award at 6:05 p.m. The NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge and the Hobey Baker Memorial Award presentation will both be shown live on ESPNU.
